…………… the opertunity of sending you a few lines hoping it will find you in perfect health and all your friends. And humbly beg your pardon for not being so good as my word in coming down to see you at Christmas which was ocasiond by taking some gates at Porton (Purton) near Wooton Bassett.

And the person that will leave this note at Drinkwaters (?) Gate ………… a hatter and now a-going down to see his wife and is a-going to leave this at Drinkwaters Gates for me.
